How to Prepare Your Roof for Winter
The UK winter brings rain, frost, ice, and occasionally snow — all of which can expose weaknesses in your roof. A little preparation in autumn can prevent costly emergency repairs in January. Here's how to get your roof winter-ready.
Clear Your Gutters
Blocked gutters are one of the most common causes of winter roof damage. When water can't drain properly, it backs up under tiles and into the fascia boards, causing rot and leaks. Clear out leaves, moss, and debris before the first frost.
Inspect for Loose or Damaged Tiles
Walk around your property and look up at the roof from ground level. Use binoculars if needed. Look for:
- Cracked or chipped tiles
- Tiles that have slipped out of position
- Missing ridge tiles or flashing
Any issues you spot now are far easier (and cheaper) to fix before winter storms arrive.
Check the Loft Space
Go into your loft and look for signs of water ingress: damp patches on timbers, staining on the underside of the felt, or any daylight showing through. Also check that your loft insulation is in good condition and hasn't been disturbed or compacted.
Trim Overhanging Branches
Trees close to your property can drop branches onto your roof during high winds. Overhanging limbs also deposit leaves into gutters and can scrape against tiles. Trim back anything that's within touching distance of your roofline.
Book a Professional Inspection
If your roof is over 15 years old, or if you've noticed any of the warning signs above, it's worth having a professional take a closer look. Many issues are invisible from the ground but easy to spot for an experienced roofer.
